Poppleton

THINGS TO DO

Poppleton has two allotment sites, a youth club and scout troop. On top of this there is Poppleton United football team, Poppleton Tigers junior football and a lawn tennis club. Forest of Galtres golf club is nearby, the beautiful greenery of Clifton Park is just a few minutes away and the lights of York are easy to reach.

EATING & DRINKING

Poppleton is home to The White Horse Inn, The Lord Collingham, The Lord Nelson and The Red Lion pubs, with most serving food. There is also a pizza takeaway and the nearby business park is home to a Chinese, a Beefeater, Asian restaurant and a fish and chip shop.

SHOPPING

Within Poppleton there is a village store, convenience shop and a Co-operative Food. There is also a newsagent, florist and butchers. There are a number of car dealerships at York Business Park and Acomb has a wide range of stores. In York city centre you will find all of the bigger high street brands.

SCHOOLS

Carr Infant School, Carr Junior School, Poppleton Road School and Our Lady of Martyrs Roman Catholic are the primary options in the village. The majority of secondary education children go to the highly sought-after Manor Church of England Academy Trust.

TRANSPORT LINKS

With its own railway station and sitting next to York Business Park, Poppleton is excellently positioned for getting around York. Almost at the corner of the the A59 to Harrogate and A1237 ring road, you can head out of the area in a number of directions from here. The closest airport is Leeds Bradford International 40 minutes away.

HISTORY

Noted as Popeltun in Anglo-Saxon Chronicles in 972, and also mentioned in the Domesday Book, it has a long history. It was the place of the murder of the Mayor of York during Richard II's reign. In 1644, a "Bridge of Boats" was built here to aid the Parliament Armies in the English Civil War. As the use of railways grew in the 19th century, Poppleton benefitted and grew itself. Today, it is mainly a dormitory village for York.

DID YOU KNOW?

Journalist Laurie Taylor created the fictional Poppleton University for her column at Times Higher Education in 1979 and it is often used as an example place in Higher Education Statistics Agency documents.
