Holgate is within 10 minutes of York city centre and ideally placed for easy access to the large train station that connects to across Britain. Public transport is frequent to take you down the A59 into the centre, and this is also how you exit the city and join the ring road. Leeds is around 45 minutes away, the Leeds Bradford International Airport is the same distance and the North York Moors are right on your doorstep.

The first mention of Holgate was in the 14th century and its proximity to York has seen large growth since the late 1800s. Within the area there are a number of historic buildings and the Holgate Mill was built in 1770, stopped grinding corn in 1933 but is still standing and selling flour today. It was also home to Hob Moor Water Mill until 1723. The York Waterworks Company supplies much of the city and has been in Holgate since 1846. In the mid 1800s, the population was little more than 150 and it wasn't until 1884 that it changed from being part of the manor of Acomb to part of York.

The writer and grammarian Lindley Murray settled in Holgate following the American War of Independence.
