THINGS TO DO

Heworth Golf Course is a popular venue for enthusiasts and right on the doorstep if you live here. Elsewhere, there is an amateur rugby league club as well as cricket and football clubs. There is indoor kart racing nearby, York offers a host of attractions and you are in easy access of the North York Moors and places like Castle Howard.

Heworth itself is home to a Co-operative Food, Costcutter, pharmacies, interior design stores, a florist and car repair businesses.

SCHOOLS

Primary schools in the area include: St Aeired's Roman Catholic, Osbaldwick, Hempland, Tang Hall, Badger Hill and Saint Lawrence's Church of England. Secondary education comes from Archbishop Colgate's School, All Saints Roman Catholic, Huntington School and Joseph Rowntree School.

TRANSPORT LINKS

Just 10 minutes by car or frequent bus from the city centre, Heworth enjoys great transport links. Going away from the city, you are close to the Howardian Hills and North York Moors along the A64. Going the other, this can take you to Leeds where you have an International Airport just an hour away.

HISTORY

It is believed that the land here was largely boggy but the village has Roman origins with a Roman road passing through from the city centre. In the Domesday Book it was called Heworde and later Hewud but is probably best known for the Battle of Heworth Moor in 1454 that led to the Wars of the Roses. In the 19th century, the Heworth Green Villas were built by the upper classes as the suburb grew in population. The Holy Trinity church was built in 1869 and Heworth has been a conservation area since 1975.
