Heslington

Fulford golf club is popular with aficionados and Walmgate Stray is an open land that is one of four areas of open land in York. Popular city attractions such as the racecourse, the National Railway Museum and Yorkshire Air Museum are all within close proximity.

Charles XII and The Deramore Arms are the two pubs in Heslington and serve local ales and food. The University is home to a couple more and surrounding areas like Fulford have a number of others to enjoy. Harpers fish and chip shop, Pizza Hut and Langtons Brasserie are all close.

There is a busy main street with banks, a post office, a hairdressers and a shop. A Nisa and Co-operative Food are the options for grocery shopping and neighbouring villages are home to stores like pharmacies, running and cycle shops, B&Q and much more.

Lord Deramore's Primary School is in the village serving Heslington and the Badger Hill estate. The majority of secondary school pupils attend Archbishop Colgate's School or Fulford School. The University of York is less that 60 years old yet is considered to be within the World Top 100 league table for universities and rated 10th out of 122 Higher Education institutions in the UK for research impact.

Less than a quarter of an hour up University Road to York, Heslington is ideally placed for getting to the city. Alternatively, it is easy to join the ring road and head out in any direction to get towards the Yorkshire coast, Leeds and further afield. Near the University, it has frequent buses and the closest airport is Leeds Bradford International.

Believed to be an Anglian settlement, Heslington was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Largely a rural area for centuries, it was only in the 1960s that housing developments started here. The grand Heslington Hall, built in 1568 for Sir Thomas Eynns, was used as a Royal Air Force headquarters between 1940 and 1945 and is now a Grade II listed building used by the University of York.

Heslington has been a conservation area since 1969.
