Almost inside the Peak District National Park, Dore is one of Sheffield's most desired locations. Take your pick from a mix of beautiful properties in this well heeled village. Old-world charm in the country, this is popular with city professionals and their families.
THINGS TO DO
Wyvern Walkers do a number of different walks, up to six miles, every couple of weeks. Dore is also home to Sheffield Tigers rugby club and the HSBC sports and social club. Neighbouring Abbeydale has a park and tennis while the gorgeous Peak District is a couple of minutes west.
EATING & DRINKING
The Dore Moor Inn serves food and cask ales from the 19th century building and is one of the three local pubs along with the Devonshire Arms and The Hare & Hounds. Also in the village is Almas Indian Brasserie, Joe & Dolores at The Grill and Union Jack fish and chip shop. Nearby Totley is home to Cross Scythes village pub and the Mediterranean Peppercorn Restaurant.
The Co-Op and Tesco Express are the two closest convenience stores. There is also a barbers, pharmacy, garden centre, post office, dentist, chiropodist and butchers in the village. Morrisons, at Woodseats is the nearest superstore.
Dore Primary School is the village school for education up to 11. There is also King Ecgbert Secondary School and Rowan Primary Special School.
Eccleshall Road and Abbeydale Road both lead either into the city of Sheffield (in 15 minutes) or out into the Peak District. There are regular buses and Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster is under an hour away.
So called because it was the 'door' between two kingdoms in Anglo-Saxon times, the earliest record of Dore is 827. In fact, it is believed that the first ever king of all England was crowned at Dore. There was a paper mill built here in the 17th century and had a population of just 500 in the 19th century. Today it is one of the city's most affluent postcodes with around 7,000 residents.
