Thorpe Willoughby

Home to some modern properties, Thorpe Willoughby is a quaint village in shooting distance of Selby, Leeds and York that boasts family homes. With many spacious, detached houses it is a quiet area with a primary school along with a few shops and easy access to the motorway.

Selby golf course is just outside the village for enthusiasts and Scalm Wood has a public footpath to the north that is popular for walking. Don't miss Brayton Barff to the south either which is popular with bird watchers and has a number of walks. For family days out, both Lotherton Hall and Cusworth Hall Museum and Park are very close, and Meadowhall is less than an hour away, as are the cities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.

The Fox is the local, award-winning pub and serves both 'Tex Mex' and traditional grub. There is also a local fish and chip shop called Mitchell's Fisheries. In nearby Hamilton, the Owl Hotel is popular and Selby has a number of options with Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian and more cuisines plus bars and pubs on offer.

Thorpe Willoughby is serviced by a couple of convenience stores, a post office and pharmacy. For a superstore, you can pick from the Co-Op, Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi in Selby, which is also home to a variety of high street brands.

Thorpe Willoughby Community Primary School is in the village for infants and secondary education is at nearby Selby High School Specialist School for the Arts and Science and Brayton High School.

Thanks to its position just off the A63, the A1(M) and M62 are easily accessible, both Leeds and York are just 45 minutes away and Selby is only five miles east. The railway runs just past the village and you can get the train from the main station in Selby. Your closest airports are Leeds Bradford International and Robin Hood Airport.

A hamlet for many centuries, it was long referred to as Thorp. The Willeby family were the original residents of the manor in the 13th century and being on the primary road to Selby it grew as the locations around it developed. Today, there are around 2,800 people living in Thorpe Willoughby, mainly using this desirable location for its transport links.

The area is believed to show the remains of the Wurm glacial episode some 10,000 years ago.
