Being in the Derwent Valley, next to a navigable river, it was useful for hundreds of years for transport access to the ocean. Freshwater fish such as salmon and trout meant it was also a food source from the 13th to 18th centuries. Menthorpe Gate railway station serviced the village between 1853 and 1953.
