Hemingbrough has a village post office, Londis convenience store and the well-established stores of R & R Country and The Blueberry Home. Howden is home to a number of mainly independent shops and boutiques while Selby has high street brands like Peacocks, Ladbrokes, Shoe Zone and supermarkets like Morrisons and Sainsburys.

The village is home to Hemingbrough Community Primary School and the majority of secondary school pupils attend Barlby High School.

Mentioned in the Knytlinga saga of the 1250s, the name is likely to mean a village of someone named Hemingr. During the Middle Ages, Hemingbrough had the River Ouse running through it and was part of the Ouse and Derwent region of England. Until 1866, Barlby, Brackenholme with Woodhall, Cliffe cum Lund, Menthorpe with Bowthrope, Osgodby and South Duffield were townships in the parish of Hemingbrough. Today it is part of North Yorkshire and still used for agriculture.

Royal Navy officer Sir Jeremiah Smith, who fought in the Anglo-Dutch wars, was a resident of Hemingbrough.
