THINGS TO DO

Eggborough Sports and Leisure Complex is a large, popular part of the village and comes with football pitches, a golf course, play area, bowling green, snooker, pool and more. There is a village hall that is used for a number of groups and activities including junior discos, line dancing and bingo. The Humber Peatlands National Reserve is nearby, the rivers offer a number of walkways and Xscape is a couple of stops west on the M62.

EATING & DRINKING

The Jolly Miller and the Horse & Jockey are the two pubs in Eggborough. Around the area there are a number of others including: The Sloop Inn, Jugg Inn, The Red Lion, The Kings Arms, The George and Dragon and Kellington Manor Hotel, which also has a restaurant. Whitley Whaler is the village fish and chip shop, La Anchor is well regarded and Selby and Castleford offer a varied range of bars and restaurants.

SHOPPING

The village has a post office, village store, Spar, butchers and a florist. Supermarkets can be found in the larger Selby and Castleford, with the latter home to the popular Glasshoughton Shopping Centre.

SCHOOLS

The village has Whitley and Eggborough Community Primary School and some attend Kellington Primary School or Hensall Community Primary School. Around five miles away are Snaith School and Brayton High School for secondary education.

TRANSPORT LINKS

Close to the M62 and home to Whitely Bridge train station, Eggborough is conveniently located for commuters. With Selby just minutes away, it is also close to Hull, Leeds and York. Leeds Bradford International Airport is only 45 minutes by car.

HISTORY

Selby was built around a Viking settlement off River Ouse and many of the villages in this area stem from these beginnings. Eggborough has the River Aire to the north and Knottingley and Goole canal is south and was built in the late 18th, early 19th century. The village grew larger thanks to the construction of coal-fired power plant in the 1960s.
