EATING & DRINKING
The award winning New Inn is the village pub and has a great selection of beers. Alternative options include The Crown Inn in Hemingbrough and The Wadkin Arms in Osgodby. There is The Yorkshire Fryer chippy along Hull Road, Hemingbrough has a bakery, fish shop and Chinese takeaway and Selby is the place to go for more international flavours.
The village is small and has just a butchers and mini-market. Neighbouring Hemingbrough has more stores including a post office, Londis and farm shop. Osgodby is home to Selby Garden Centre and the market town is only minutes away for bigger shopping.
Cliffe Primary School is in the village, and the majority of older children attend Barlby High School a couple of miles away.
On the A63 Hull Road, Cliffe is between Selby and Howden - just 10 minutes from each. Close to the A19, it is just half an hour from York, and easy access to the M62 means Hull is in touching distance. Nearby Wressle is home to a train station and the closest airport is Leeds Bradford International, which is an hour away.
Evidence shows that the area has been inhabited since the Iron Age or Romans. Cliffe has had a permanent population since the Medieval times when it was used for farming. In 1086, the Domesday survey said it was part of Howden and it was on the banks of the River Ouse before it naturally changed course. The arrival of the Hull and Selby Railway in 1840 helped Cliffe grow and there have been a few businesses come and go here. Today it is mainly a commuter village to Selby and York.
