The town of Selby lies in the Vale of York, 12 miles South of York, 23 miles east of Leeds and 37 miles west of Hull. The town's origins date from the establishment of a Viking settlement on the banks of the River Ouse. Archaeological investigations in Selby have revealed extensive remains, dating from the Roman period onwards. It is believed that Selby originated from a settlement called Seletun. Selby Abbey was founded when Saint Benedict of Nursia saw three swans on a lake in Selby, he saw it as a sign of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the official crest of Selby is to this day The Three Swans.

Selby now benefits from having well known high street stores, independent shops and an open air market meaning there is shopping for all tastes. Selby is a good commuter town for both Leeds (A63) and York (A19) making it a popular place to live.
