Seacroft

Seacroft is a sprawling suburb of east Leeds, located just four miles from the city centre. The area has a number of estates that offer spacious, affordable housing with all the amenities of a city, but without the overcrowding. The area also attracts with its diverse community and proximity to neighbouring villages.

THINGS TO DO

There are plenty of adventures and diversions in Seacroft. The Parish of Seacroft plays a prominent role in the community and often offers local events, children’s activities and holiday festivals. Additionally, the neighbouring villages of Wetherby, Cross Gates and Leeds make for great day trips and nature walks and offer an array of entertainment for kids and adults.

EATING & DRINKING

There are a variety of casual eateries, pubs and bars in Seacroft. The international cuisine here is a reflection of the area’s diverse community. The Fisherman’s Wife is among the favourites with its quality fish and chips. La Cantina 44 is a popular Italian restaurant, while Masala Hut serves up great Indian food. There are also chain takeaways like Subway and McDonalds. The Cricket’s Arm and the Seacroft Bar are favourite hangout spots for many.

SHOPPING

Upon its construction in the early 2000s, the Seacroft Green Shopping Centre' was one of the largest shopping malls in Leeds. It provided residents of Seacroft with access to a wide variety of shops and services that, today, include a Tesco supermarket, Peacock’s, Savers and Greggs and Brantano. In addition to the shops at the centre, the market town of Wetherby is a popular place with its wide variety of shops, amenities and restaurants, as too is Leeds city centre. The Crossgates Shopping Centre also offers a variety of fashion shops, grocery markets and restaurants.

The Seacroft Green Shopping Centre serves as the main transportation hub with the primary bus station located here. It services Seacroft and the surrounding areas of Leeds city centre, Wetherby and Harrogate. The nearest train station in Cross Gates services Leeds, Garforth, Bradford Interchange, York, Hull, Scarborough and Halifax. Seacroft is approximately 25 minutes by car from Leeds Bradford Airport.

HISTORY

Early settlement is believed to have occurred during the Neolithic age. However, much of Seacroft’s recorded history begins much later. In the 1950s, after the war, the area underwent an expansion and was promoted from a village to a “satellite town.” The construction of the Seacroft Civic Centre in the 1960s then solidified the suburb’s ever-growing presence. The 21st century ushered in a new era in Seacroft and an extensive shopping centre – which has provided a valuable outlet for numerous shops, services and amenities.

DID YOU KNOW?

Seacroft was once a small village that was home to the Green. The Green is a strip of land that still exists and now encompasses the Cricketers Arms pub and the parish Church St. James.
