Moortown

Golfers will enjoy the fabulous Moortown and Sand Moor golf courses in the area and gym goers can head to the large David Lloyd complex. Eccup Reservoir is home to beautiful red kites and great for walking while nearby Roundhay Park is 700 acres of parkland and perfect for family fun with numerous events throughout the year as well as being home to the exotic Tropical World.

Around the area there are takeaways, carvery and international restaurants to cater for every taste. Some standouts include the Italian Amici and the Filmore & Union deli. The local pub is the Lord Darcy and as you get closer to the city centre there are a number of lively bars.

The Moortown Corner junction has a shopping area with a number of different stores along with a large Marks and Spencer supermarket, banks and restaurants. On top of this, the Moor Allerton District Centre sits next to the Black Moor estate and has a library and shopping including a Homebase and a Sainsbury’s superstore.

Moortown has a primary school named after the area and there are also a number of other great schools. Allerton Grange School and Allerton High School are the traditional secondary schools in the area, though there are many nearby.

Easy access to Leeds by bus means that it is ideal for commuters to the city but Harrogate and York are also less than 45 minutes away. For weekend trips, the Yorkshire Dales are a short drive, Burley Park train station is the closest rail transport and Leeds Bradford International Airport is less than an hour.

Old Moortown was little more than woodland for centuries before it became enclosed farmland in the 19th century. By the early 1900s, it was part of the tram route from Leeds and this led to the growth of the area. As mini estates began to be built, the population grew with businesses and amenities opening. In the space of a few decades it went from an agricultural village to a developed suburb and today it continues to expand.
