There has been a settlement in Headingley since Roman Times. Headingley was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Hedingelei, and the name is thought to derive from the Old English "Head(d)inga" meaning the descendent of Head(d) and the Old English word for Open Ground, being "lēah", so "The Clearing of Hedda's People".
With close proximity to the Leeds Universities, Headingley and Hyde Park has become somewhat of a hub for students and cosmopolitan leisure. The population profile of Headingley and Hyde Park is heavily skewed to those of university age, with 60% of the population between the ages of 16 and 24.
