Did you know it wasn't until 1912 that Crossgates become part of Leeds. It had previously been linked with Selby. It is thought the name Crossgates came from a set of gates that blocked the main road from Whitkirk to Seacroft, probably to prevent grazing cattle from roaming; though it could also come from the older norse word "gait" meaning road indicating a meeting of roads / paths.
Crossgates has continued to grow and now boasts its own shopping centre. Situated on the Leeds ring road, and with close access to the M1 it makes a great base for commuting to Leeds or further afield. Crossgates train station gives direct access to Liverpool, Leeds, Selby and York. With the creation of the Thorpe Park Area, Crossgates now has even more to offer with a large Cinema, Gym and large high street chains.
