THINGS TO DO

Sprotbrough has three parks for walking and children’s play areas: Anchorage Lange, Sprotbrough Road and New Lane. The Sprotbrough Riverboat is a popular cruise that has been running through the beautiful waterways since 1975. Sprotbrough Flash Nature Reserve in the Don Gorge is a diverse area, rich in wildlife for bird watchers, enthusiasts and walkers. Nearby Denaby Ings is a three-mile walk for a full day out. Elsewhere, Cusworht Hall Museum & Park is to the north east and perfect for a family day out.

EATING & DRINKING

Spotbrough has five pubs: The Boat Inn gastro-pub, The Ivanhoe, The Newton Inn, OTTO’s wine bar and Sprotbrough Country (private members) Club. Mehfil Indian Brasserie restaurant is in the village and nearby Cusworth, Newton, Warmsworth as well as Doncaster have more options and international cuisine.

SHOPPING

Convenience stores in the village are the Sprotsprough News and Spar Village Shop. In neighbouring Newton there is a Sainsbury’s Local but for a superstore you need to head to Morrisons in Doncaster or Asda in Balby. The town centre has all the high street brands and there is Lakeside Village Outlet Shopping.

TRANSPORT LINKS

Doncaster is just four miles east of Sprotbrough and that makes for easy access in the car as well as using public transport – buses number 49 and 219 run through the village every 15 minutes. It is also off the A1(M), for connections north and south, and to the M18. Robin Hood airport is 25 minutes away.

HISTORY

Named in the Domesday Book as Sproteburg, the name originates from Old English and the whole parish included Cadeby, Wildthorpe, Cusworth, Skinthorpe and Newton. This was vast areas of agricultural land and owned by the rich Fitzwilliam family for years. Today, it is filled with beautiful properties and a dormitory village for Doncaster.
