Owston Ferry

Being rural, there are a number of walking options, including along the river. The historic market town of Epworth is a popular location for a day out in the area, Doncaster has the Yorkshire Wildlife Park with good shopping and Gainsborough and Scunthorpe are other options.

There are two pubs in the village: The Crooked Billet and The White Hart, with both found near the river. Nearby Epworth and Haxey offer more options.

On the High Street there is a Premier Shop convenience store but bigger shopping needs to be done in the villages or towns a little further afield.

St Martin's Church of England Primary School is in Owston Ferry and South Axholme Academy is the closest secondary school.

Owston Ferry sits off the River Trent and is around half an hour to Doncaster, Gainsborough and Scunthorpe, and an hour from Sheffield. Haxey and the A161 are found next to the village and Robin Hood Airport is just 12 miles away.

Deriving from Old Norse meaning 'east farmstead', Owston has a long history and was recorded in the Domesday Book as Ostone. There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the village and it is believed to have been constructed shortly after the Norman Conquest - on top of a Roman castrum - but it only lasted until 1175-76, after a revolt. The church was built in 1603 and is a Grade I listed building.

Philosopher and inventor Philippa Foot was born here in 1920.
