HISTORY
Noted in the Domesday Book as Finig lei - meaning "a clearing in the fens" - parts of Finningley Church date back to this time. For many years it was classed as Nottinghamshire and enjoyed fertile lands that made for great wheat and rape crops each year. There was also a large number of trees, which were cut down and sold in Doncaster. In recent years it has been best known for the airport which was used by the RAF and closed in 1996 - it is now Robin Hood airport.
